Cav. is short for cavalry, the mounted branch of the army, as in Co. B, 2d Iowa Cav.
Cav. means cavalry, soldiers who served on horseback. It appears in rosters, pension papers, gravestones and veterans' census entries, usually after the regiment number and state.
Read the whole unit name. Co. B, 1st Neb. Cav. and Co. B, 1st Neb. Inf. are different units with different records, and soldiers did transfer between them.
