Chap.
Chap. in a military roster means chaplain, the regiment's clergyman; in a book or law citation, chap. means chapter.
The Nebraska Civil War roster key gives Chap. for chaplain, and the regiment's chaplain is listed with the field and staff officers. A military chaplain ministered to the soldiers and often to their families.
In printed laws and books the same letters stand for chapter, as in Laws of 1853, chap. 91. So check whether Chap. comes before a man's name or before a number.
