F&AM
F&AM stands for Free and Accepted Masons, and on a gravestone or obituary marks a member of a Masonic lodge.
F&AM is the abbreviation in the formal names of many Masonic lodges and grand lodges, as in the Grand Lodge of Free and Accepted Masons of a state. Other grand lodges use AF&AM, Ancient Free and Accepted Masons, for historical reasons; both are mainstream Freemasonry. Masonic symbols come mainly from stonemasons' tools, above all the square and compasses, which often appear with the letters on a gravestone.
An obituary may name the lodge and number, as in Lodge No. 42, F. & A.M. That lodge may hold membership records with dates of joining and death.
