Far.

Far. in a cavalry roster means farrier, the soldier who shod and cared for the company's horses.

The Nebraska Civil War roster, which covers a cavalry regiment, gives Far. for farrier in its key. A farrier trims and shoes horses' hooves, combining a blacksmith's skills with knowledge of the horse's foot.

In a cavalry company the farrier was an enlisted man with a special duty, so Far. after a name is his post, not a separate civilian job. Look for him in the same service and pension files as other soldiers.
