unm.
Unm. means "unmarried": the person had never married, or at least was not married at the time of the record.
Unm. is a genealogist's short form of unmarried. In a family genealogy, a child followed by unm. usually never married, which tells you there will be no marriage record or descendants to look for.
Treat it as the compiler's knowledge at the time the book was written. A person listed unm. in a genealogy printed in 1880 may have married later.
