Hematemesis

Hematemesis means vomiting blood; on an old record it was a symptom, often of a stomach ulcer, cancer or liver disease.

The word joins Greek for blood and vomiting. Webster's 1913 defines it as a vomiting of blood. It differs from hemoptysis, coughing up blood from the lungs.

The blood usually comes from the upper gut, from causes such as ulcers, tumors of the stomach or gullet and swollen veins from liver disease.
