French month names

French month names in records: janvier, février, mars, avril, mai, juin, juillet, août, septembre, octobre, novembre, décembre.

Most French month names resemble English, but juin (June) and juillet (July) are easy to swap, and août is August. Old spellings vary, such as febvrier for février, and the last four months may be shortened to 7bre, 8bre, 9bre and Xbre.

Between 1792 and 1806 French civil records used the Republican calendar, with months such as vendémiaire and germinal, which must be converted with a table to the ordinary calendar.
