German words in old records · card B

begraben

Begraben is German for "buried"; in a church death register it marks the burial date, which follows the date of death.

Begraben means buried. Older entries may use beerdigt or bestattet for the same thing, and the register itself can be called a burial book (Begräbnisse, Beerdigungen) rather than a death book.

If an entry gives only begr. and a date, the person died shortly before, but the exact day of death may not be written. In that case record the date as a burial, not a death, so later researchers know what the source said.
