Gemeinde

Gemeinde can mean a municipality, a parish or a church congregation; in German records it usually names the local community a person belonged to.

Gemeinde is a flexible word. In civil records it is the municipality, the unit of local government. In church records it is the congregation or parish, as in evangelische Gemeinde.

The difference matters for searching: a civil Gemeinde and a church parish do not always cover the same villages. Compounds such as Kirchengemeinde (church congregation) and Heimatgemeinde (home community) tell you which is meant.
