Kirchspiel

Kirchspiel is an older German word for a parish: the area, often several villages, whose people belonged to one parish church.

A Kirchspiel covered the territory of one church congregation. Small villages without their own church belonged to the Kirchspiel of a nearby church, and their baptisms, marriages and burials were recorded there.

This matters when your ancestor's village is not on a list of parishes. Find out which Kirchspiel the village belonged to, and search that church book. Other words for parish in German records are Pfarrei and Gemeinde.
