Italian words in old records · card G

gennaio

Gennaio is Italian for January; old records often spell it gennajo, with j for i, as in addì undici gennajo.

Gennaio is January, from Latin Ianuarius. Older writing used j for i between vowels, so you will often see gennajo in 19th-century acts. The month is written in lowercase in Italian, though clerks sometimes capitalized it, and the abbreviation is gen.

Dates in acts usually read addì, on the day, then the day in words, then del mese di, of the month of, and the month: addì undici del mese di gennaio. The day number is usually a cardinal number, undici, eleven, not an ordinal.
