Italian words in old records · card S

sepolto

Sepolto is Italian for "buried" (sepolta for a woman); in a parish burial entry it gives where and when the body was laid to rest.

Sepolto is the past participle of seppellire, to bury, and describes a person laid in the grave. An older spelling is sepulto. The burial itself is sepoltura or seppellimento.

You meet these words in parish death and burial books and in notes beside a death entry. A burial date and a death date are different facts, so note which one you have before entering it in your tree. The cemetery is the cimitero, and the funeral rites are esequie.
