sindaco

Sindaco is Italian for "mayor," the head of a comune, who also served as civil registrar, so his name opens many birth and death acts.

The sindaco is the head of the comune's administration. A royal decree of 15 November 1865 made the mayor the ufficiale dello stato civile, the civil registrar, for the Kingdom of Italy, so many civil acts open with his name and title, or that of the man acting for him.

Sindico is an older spelling. In the Middle Ages the word named many kinds of officials who represented a town. Primo assessore, the mayor's assistant, is another title you may see near the signatures.
