ufficiale dello stato civile

Ufficiale dello stato civile is Italian for the civil registrar, the official who wrote and signed birth, marriage and death acts.

The ufficiale dello stato civile is the official in a comune who drew up the acts of birth, marriage and death. Stato civile means civil registration. Civil registers began in Italy under Napoleon, between 1806 and 1810 in the north and from 1809 in the Kingdom of Naples, where they continued after 1815.

A royal decree of 15 November 1865 gave the title to the mayor (sindaco) across the new Kingdom of Italy; in most of central and northern Italy the civil registers start between 1866 and about 1870. Acts were kept in two copies; the second went to the local court and later reached the State Archives.
