Italian words in old records · card S

sposi

Sposi is Italian for "bride and groom" or the married couple; sposo is the groom and sposa the bride in a marriage act.

Sposo means bridegroom or new husband and sposa bride or new wife; the plural sposi is the couple together, bride and groom, or newlyweds. Old word lists also translate sposi as husband and wife.

The usual word for a married couple outside the wedding is coniugi, and coniugato means married. Sposini means newlyweds. The abbreviation sp. may stand for sposo or sposa. Sposi is also a form of the verb sposare, to marry, but in an act it nearly always means the couple.
