Italian words in old records · card P

pubblicazioni

Pubblicazioni are Italian marriage banns, the public notice of a couple's intention to marry, posted at the town hall and church.

Pubblicazioni di matrimonio are the formal public notice that a couple intends to marry. The details of the bride and groom were posted on the notice board of the comune and, for a church wedding, also at the church door. Fare le pubblicazioni means to publish the banns.

Older records also call them notificazioni or bandi di matrimonio. Copies of the banns often survive in the processetti packet, and church banns were posted on two or three Sundays in a row. A record of banns shows the couple's intent, not that the marriage took place.
