obiit

Obiit is Latin for "he (or she) died," often shortened to ob. on gravestones and in registers, followed by the date of death.

Obiit is a verb meaning died, literally went away. It is the same for men and women. On gravestones and memorial tablets it often stands alone or as ob., as in obiit 4 Julii 1790.

In registers it is the death date, which can differ from the burial date (sepultus). Paired with aetatis it gives the age at death.
