oppidum

Oppidum is Latin for a town or walled town; oppidi means of the town.

Oppidum means town, sometimes a walled town. In Roman use it meant any town other than Rome itself, which was called urbs.

The word tells you your ancestor lived in a town rather than a village, so look for town records, such as council or citizenship books, as well as the parish register.
