Norwegian words in old records · card B

begravet

Begravet means "buried"; Norwegian burial registers are headed Begravede, and the date they give is the burial date, often a week or more after death.

Begravet comes from begrave, borrowed from Middle Low German begraven, and the funeral is begravelse. Burials were recorded in the parish where the person was buried, usually the parish where they died.

Stillbirths were usually entered in the burial register. Burial records can also cover people born before the parish kept baptism and marriage records, which makes them useful for the oldest generation in a parish.
