Norwegian words in old records · card D

død

Død is Norwegian for "dead" or "death"; church books list deaths under Døde or Begravede, with the date of death and of burial.

The burial list of a Norwegian church book gives the name, the date of death and of burial, the residence, age and occupation, and sometimes the cause of death. If only one date is written, it is the burial date. For young children the father's name is usually given.

Burial normally followed one to two weeks after death, but in winter the wait could be weeks or even months, so do not assume the two dates were close.
