dødfødt

Dødfødt means "stillborn"; Norwegian church books usually enter a stillborn child in the burial list rather than among the baptized.

The word joins død, dead, and født, born. A stillborn child was not baptized, so the entry is usually in the burial register, and for young children the father's name is usually the one given.

Some baptism registers also note stillbirths, so check both lists. Midwives were to report a stillbirth, or a child who died soon after birth, to the parish priest within 24 hours.
