Swedish words in old records · card D

död

Död is Swedish for "dead" or "death"; in a death book or household examination roll it marks when a person died, often written d.

Död can mean dead, as an adjective, or death, and döden is "the death." Swedish death and burial books (död- och begravningsböcker) give the date of death, the burial date, the age and often the cause. In a household examination roll a person's line is closed with död or d. and the date.

The abbreviation d. is risky: in Swedish records it can also mean dotter (daughter) or den (the). Check whether a date or a name follows.
