Polish words in old records · card W

wieś

Wieś is Polish for "village"; in records it usually appears as wsi, as in we wsi Kępa, "in the village of Kępa."

Wieś means village and also the countryside in general. It changes form a lot: wsi is the genitive and locative, so we wsi means in the village, and the abbreviation is w. A small village is wioska.

The village name that follows is also in the locative case and its ending changes, so we wsi Pomaskach is the village Pomaski. Look up the base form in a gazetteer before searching maps. Compare miasto, town, and miasteczko, small town.
