włościanin

Włościanin is an old Polish word for "peasant" or farmer (włościanka for a woman), common as an occupation in 19th-century records.

Włościanin is a dated word for a peasant, a country man who worked the land. It comes from włość, an estate or landed property. Dictionaries give chłop, peasant, as its synonym.

In records it stands where an occupation or social status belongs, after the person's name. It does not by itself tell you how much land the family held; more specific words such as gospodarz, komornik or zagrodnik say more about that. The feminine form is włościanka.
