lysning
Lysning is Swedish for the banns: the announcement in church of a planned marriage, read on three Sundays in a row.
In Sweden the pastor announced the couple's intention to marry at the main service on three Sundays running, so that anyone who knew of an obstacle could speak up. If the bride and groom came from different parishes, the banns were read in both.
Marriage books often list the lysning dates before the wedding date, and sometimes only the banns were recorded in one of the two parishes. Lysn. is the usual abbreviation.
