Swedish words in old records · card M

måg

Måg is Swedish for "son-in-law"; in a household roll it marks a daughter's husband living on her parents' farm.

When a daughter married and her husband came to live on her family's farm, he was listed there as måg, often abbreviated m.

The word matters because his surname will not match the family's, and his patronymic points back to his own father. In the same abbreviations m. can also mean man (husband) or mor (mother), so read the context.
