old Swedish month names
Old Swedish month names such as torsmånad (January), hömånad (July) and julmånad (December) were native names used in place of the Latin-based ones.
The old names run: torsmånad (January), göjemånad (February), vårmånad (March), gräsmånad (April), blomstermånad (May), sommarmånad (June), hömånad (July), skördemånad (August), höstmånad (September), slaktmånad (October), vintermånad (November) and julmånad (December).
SAOB, the Swedish Academy's historical dictionary, notes that names such as göjemånad and hömånad were printed in the Swedish almanac until 1900, and that today they appear mostly in literary or historical writing. If a date has a word ending in -månad, match it against this list rather than guessing from the first part.
