German words in old records · card S

Sonntag

Sonntag is German for Sunday; German records often give the weekday in written-out dates, as in Sonntag den 4ten Mai.

Many German entries name the weekday before the date, especially in civil records and in written-out dates. Sunday is also the day on which marriage banns were read in church, so banns dates in a marriage entry are usually Sundays or holy days.

Church books sometimes name a Sunday by its place in the church year instead of by its date, such as Trinity Sunday or Low Sunday, so a date may need converting with a calendar for that year.
