Latin days of the week

In Latin records Sunday is dominica, Saturday sabbatum, and Monday to Friday are often feria secunda to feria sexta, or dies Lunae, Martis, Mercurii, Jovis, Veneris.

Latin has two systems. The planetary names run dies Solis (Sunday), dies Lunae (Monday), dies Martis, dies Mercurii, dies Jovis, dies Veneris and dies Saturni. Church Latin instead numbers the weekdays: feria secunda is Monday, feria tertia Tuesday, through feria sexta for Friday, with Sunday called dominica and Saturday sabbatum.

A register may give the weekday with the date. Use it to check your reading of a hard date: if the weekday does not match the calendar of that year, recheck the day or month.
