ecclesia

Ecclesia is Latin for a church, a house of worship; ecclesiae means of the church.

Ecclesia comes from a Greek word for an assembly of citizens. In Latin it came to mean a church, a house of worship. Medieval scribes also wrote eclesia.

You meet it in phrases such as ecclesia parochialis (the parish church), in facie ecclesiae (before the congregation) and in the name of a church: ecclesia Sancti Martini.
