hic jacet

Hic jacet is Latin for here lies, the opening words of many old epitaphs.

Hic jacet, also written hic iacet, means here lies. It begins many older gravestones and church wall tablets, followed by the name in Latin, the date of death and sometimes the age.

The phrase is so standard that an English word, hic jacet, came to mean an epitaph itself. Expect the rest of the inscription to follow Latin grammar too, so a name may end in -us or -a.
