levans

Levans means lifting, and in a baptism register levans (plural levantes) is a sponsor who held the child: a godparent.

Levans literally means lifting or raising. In baptism registers it names the sponsor who held the child at the font, so levantes are the godparents. It is used alongside patrinus and matrina.

Sponsors were often relatives, so these names can reveal grandparents, aunts and uncles. Note them carefully even when they do not seem connected at first.
