sobrinus

Sobrinus (feminine sobrina) is Latin for a cousin, especially on the mother's side; in some uses it meant a nephew or a cousin's child.

Sobrinus comes from soror, sister, and first meant the child of a mother's sister. Dictionaries give cousin on the mother's side, and the word also took on meanings such as nephew or, in late Latin, a cousin's child.

Because of this range, read sobrinus as a cousin of some kind and confirm the exact link from other records. Consobrinus is the more common word for a first cousin.
