Florist

A florist grew or sold flowers and ornamental plants, in a greenhouse, a flower garden or a flower shop.

The census treated the florist as a kind of grower, not a farmer. In 1900 enumerators were told to tell a farmer from a gardener, fruit grower, nurseryman or florist, and not to confuse a hired garden or nursery laborer with a proprietor florist who ran the business.

The 1930 instructions show both sides of the trade with the examples florist, flower shop and florist, flower garden.
