Gardener
A gardener grew vegetables, fruit or flowers, for an employer's estate or for sale; in census returns he is set apart from a farmer.
In 1900 enumerators were told to distinguish a farmer from a gardener, fruit grower, nurseryman or florist who raised vegetables for market or grew fruit, flowers and plants, and to tell a hired garden laborer from a proprietor gardener.
The 1930 examples include gardener, private estate, a paid worker tending a wealthy family's grounds. Market gardener and truck farmer are close relatives.
