Ulcer of the stomach
Ulcer of the stomach meant an open sore in the stomach lining that could eat through the wall; it is now called a gastric or peptic ulcer.
IPUMS gives stomach ulcer its own code, separate from inflammation of the stomach, and the 1911 Census Bureau manual has a title for ulcer of the stomach.
The same manual names perforating ulcer of the stomach as one cause of peritonitis. Wikipedia explains that an ulcer in the stomach is called a gastric ulcer, one in the first part of the intestine a duodenal ulcer.
As seen in a recordCause of death line, state death certificate, 1910s to 1930s
Cause: Ulcer of stomach, perforated. Duration: 2 ds.
