uterinus

Uterinus means born of the same mother; frater uterinus is a half brother who shares the mother but not the father.

Uterinus comes from uterus, the womb. Lewis and Short defines it as born of the same mother and cites it with fratres (brothers) and soror (sister) in Roman law texts.

In a family entry, frater uterinus or soror uterina tells you the two people had the same mother and different fathers. Compare germanus, which marks a full brother or sister. Look for a first marriage of the mother to find the other father.
