vir
Vir is Latin for a man and also for a husband; viri means of the man or the husband.
Vir means an adult man. Dictionaries also give husband, and in older texts a soldier or hero.
In a marriage or burial entry, vir beside a woman's name usually means her husband: Anna, uxor Pauli means Anna, wife of Paul, and Paulus, vir Annae means Paul, husband of Anna. Maritus is the more specific word for husband.
